AI Overviews are the AI generated summaries Google puts above the blue links. Here is how they are built and what it takes to be cited in one.

AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google places at the top of some search results. They answer the query in a few sentences, cite a small number of sources as links, and push the traditional blue links further down the page. They reached the UK in August 2024 and now appear on a large share of informational searches.
How Google builds one
An AI Overview is not written from scratch. Google takes your query, fans it out into related subqueries, retrieves passages from pages already in its index, and has Gemini summarise what it finds. The links shown alongside are the pages those passages came from.
Two things follow. You can’t appear in an AI Overview without being crawled and indexed in the normal way, because there is no separate submission route. And the unit of selection is the passage, not the page, so a single clear paragraph can get cited from a page ranking eighth.
What it does to your clicks
Informational queries lose clicks. Studies through 2025 put the fall in organic click-through rate on queries carrying an AI Overview at somewhere between 15% and 35%, with the worst losses on definitional and how-to searches where the summary answers the question completely.
Commercial and transactional queries hold up far better. Someone comparing prices, checking stock or looking for a local supplier still has to visit a site. Google also shows AI Overviews less often on those queries, and treats medical, financial and legal topics more cautiously.
Being cited is worth having. The citation is a link; it sits above everything else on the page, and the traffic it sends is small but unusually well qualified.
What gets you cited
- Answer first structure. Put the direct answer in the opening two sentences under a heading that matches how people phrase the question. Answers buried in paragraph six do not get extracted.
- Clean technical access. Google Extended and the standard Googlebot need to reach the page. Content that only appears after JavaScript execution is less reliably picked up.
- Specifics. Named figures, dates, prices and product names give the model something concrete to quote. Vague copy gets skipped in favour of a competitor who committed to a number.
- Corroboration. Claims repeated on other credible sites are safer for Google to summarise, so digital PR and citations feed directly into this.
How to measure it
Search Console does not split AI Overview impressions out separately, so treat the reporting as inference rather than fact. The usual approach is to track a set of queries you care about, check which of them trigger an overview, then watch impressions and click-through rate on those queries against a control set that does not. A drop in CTR with impressions flat is the signature.
Third-party rank trackers now flag overview presence on tracked keywords, which is the quickest way to size the problem across a whole keyword set.
The practical response is to shift effort towards queries where a summary cannot finish the job, and to make sure the pages you own are the ones being quoted when it can. That is most of what our AI search work involves.
Common questions
Can I stop my site appearing in AI Overviews?
Partly. The nosnippet and max snippet robots directives limit what Google can show, but they also limit your normal search snippets, which usually costs more than it saves. Blocking Google Extended stops your content from training Gemini but doesn’t remove you from overviews.
Do AI Overviews appear on every search?
Coverage varies by query type and changes month to month. They are most common on informational and comparison queries and much rarer on navigational searches, local intent and sensitive topics.
Does ranking first mean I get cited?
Not necessarily. Citations overlap with the top ten, but the match is far from complete, and pages outside the first page do get quoted. Clear structure and a direct answer matter as much as position.
