AI SEO makes your site easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite, so you show up in AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers.

AI SEO is the practice of making your website easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite, so your brand shows up in answers from Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity as well as in the normal blue links. It isn’t a replacement for SEO. It’s SEO with a second audience: the language models that now sit between your content and a lot of searchers.
The term gets used two ways, which causes confusion. Some people mean using AI tools to do SEO work faster. Others mean optimising for AI search results. This guide is about the second meaning, because that’s the one that changes what you publish and how you measure it. If you want the first, we’ve covered it in can SEO be done by AI?
It matters now because more searches end with an AI-written answer at the top of the page. If your content isn’t one of the sources that answer draws from, you can rank on page one and still be invisible to the person who only reads the summary.
How AI SEO differs from traditional SEO
The foundations are the same, but the unit of success is different. Traditional SEO aims to rank a page for a query. AI SEO aims to have a passage from your page selected, trusted and cited inside a generated answer.
That shift changes a few things in practice:
| Area | Traditional SEO | AI SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in the top results | Get a passage cited in an AI answer |
| What gets judged | The whole page | Individual sections and claims |
| Query style | Short keywords | Longer, conversational questions and follow-ups |
| Main measure | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Citations, brand mentions, share of answers, then traffic |
| Brand signals | Helpful, mostly via links | Central, because models lean on how often and where you’re mentioned |

How AI search picks its sources
AI search systems break a question into smaller sub-questions, retrieve passages for each one, then write a single answer from what they found. Google calls this query fan-out. It means one page can be pulled in for a sub-question it answers well, even if it doesn’t rank first for the original query.
Most of these systems still rely on a search index to find candidate pages. Google’s AI features draw on Google’s own index, and Google’s guidance is that the same SEO best practices apply: pages need to be indexable, crawlable and eligible to show a snippet. So if your technical SEO is broken, your AI visibility is too. Our explainer on what AI search is goes into the mechanics.
What AI SEO involves in practice
AI SEO comes down to five areas of work. None of them are exotic, but each needs doing with AI retrieval in mind.
- Technical access. Make sure search engines and AI crawlers can reach and render your pages. Check robots.txt, JavaScript rendering, canonical tags and that important content isn’t hidden behind tabs or logins.
- Answer-first content. Open each page and each section with a direct, self-contained answer. A model lifting one paragraph should get a complete, accurate point without needing the rest of the page.
- Clear structure. Use literal headings, short paragraphs, lists for steps and tables for comparisons. Structure helps machines split your page into passages that make sense on their own.
- Entities and trust. Be consistent about who you are, what you do and where you operate. Name people, products and places plainly, add author details, and use schema markup to confirm the facts. Our guide to entity-based SEO explains why this matters.
- Mentions beyond your site. Models form a view of your brand from what the wider web says about it. Digital PR, expert commentary, reviews and listings on trusted sites all feed that picture.
How to measure AI SEO
You measure AI SEO by tracking whether you appear in AI answers, not just where you rank. Start by picking a set of prompts and queries your customers actually use, then check which brands get cited for each one and how often you’re among them.
Google Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode appearances inside its normal performance data, and in 2026 Google began testing separate generative AI performance reports with a subset of sites. Third-party tools can track AI Overview presence and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Pair those with your analytics so you can see whether AI visibility turns into enquiries. Our post on search visibility covers how to build a fairer scorecard.
Common mistakes with AI SEO
The biggest mistake is treating AI SEO as a separate project with its own tricks. Hidden prompts, keyword-stuffed FAQs and pages written only for bots don’t work, and they can damage trust with both users and search engines.
Other mistakes we see often:
- Burying the answer under a long introduction, so no single passage is quotable.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident through blanket robots.txt rules or firewall settings.
- Publishing thin AI-written pages at scale, which adds nothing a model can’t already say.
- Measuring only clicks, then concluding AI visibility doesn’t matter when the brand is being cited without a click.

Common questions
Is AI SEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AEO (answer engine optimisation) are other names for optimising to be cited in AI answers. AI SEO is the broader umbrella term.
Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?
No. AI search systems still rely on search indexes and the same quality signals, so strong traditional SEO is the base that AI visibility is built on.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show in AI answers within weeks once pages are recrawled. Brand mentions and authority take longer, usually several months of steady work.
Can small businesses compete in AI search?
Yes. AI answers cite specific passages, so a smaller site with a clear, accurate answer to a niche question can be cited ahead of a bigger brand.
