Google ranks Wix sites on content, relevance, links and technical health, not the builder. Here's how to set one up to rank.

Wix SEO works the same way as SEO on any other platform: Google ranks Wix sites on content, relevance, links and technical health, not on which builder you used. Wix gives you control over titles, meta descriptions, URLs, redirects, robots.txt and structured data, so a well-run Wix site can rank competitively.

Wix had a poor reputation for SEO in its early years, mostly because sites were heavy on JavaScript and offered little control. That’s changed. Wix now renders pages on the server, generates XML sitemaps automatically and exposes most of the settings an SEO needs.

Where Wix sites usually fall down isn’t the platform. It’s the basics: thin pages, duplicate titles, slow image-heavy designs and no real plan for what each page should rank for.

Is Wix good for SEO?

Yes, for most small and medium business sites. Wix handles the technical foundations that trip up many self-built sites, and its editor makes on-page changes easy for non-developers.

There are limits. You have less control over server configuration, page templates and code than you would on a self-hosted CMS such as WordPress. Very large sites, complex ecommerce catalogues or international sites with many language versions may find those limits matter. For a service business, a local firm or a portfolio, they rarely do.

Set up the foundations

Get these right first. They take an afternoon and affect every page on the site.

  1. Connect a custom domain. A free Wix subdomain won’t rank well for competitive terms and looks less trustworthy to users.
  2. Work through the Wix SEO setup checklist. It’s in the SEO section of your dashboard and walks you through the basics, including connecting your site to Google Search Console.
  3. Check your site is visible to search engines. In the SEO settings, make sure the site isn’t set to hide from search results. This is sometimes left switched on after a build.
  4. Confirm your sitemap. Wix generates one automatically at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Submit it in Search Console.
  5. Set up Google Business Profile if you serve customers locally, and make sure your name, address and phone number match the website exactly.

Optimise each page

Each important page should target one main topic and say so clearly. In the Wix editor, open a page’s SEO settings to edit the following:

  • SEO title. Lead with the main keyword and keep it under about 60 characters. Our guide to title tags covers what makes one work.
  • Meta description. A clear summary that earns the click. Google often rewrites these, but a good one still helps.
  • URL slug. Short, readable and descriptive. Avoid changing slugs on pages that already rank unless you set up a redirect.
  • Headings. One H1 per page, with H2s that describe each section. Wix lets you set heading levels in the text editor; use them for structure, not just for size.
  • Image alt text. Describe what the image shows. It helps accessibility and image search.

Content matters more than any setting. A service page with three lines of text and a stock photo won’t outrank a competitor who explains the service, the process, the pricing approach and the common questions. The principles in our guide to on-page SEO apply on Wix exactly as they do anywhere else.

Use Wix’s technical SEO tools

Wix gives you more technical control than most people realise.

Tool What it does When to use it
URL redirect manager Creates 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones Whenever you change a slug, delete a page or move from another platform
Robots.txt editor Controls which parts of the site search engines can crawl Rarely needed, but useful for blocking low-value areas
Structured data markup Adds schema to pages beyond the defaults Wix includes For FAQs, local business details, events and similar
Canonical tags Tells Google which version of a page is the main one When similar content exists on more than one URL
Bulk SEO settings Sets title and description patterns for page types For blog posts and product pages at scale

If you’re moving to Wix from another platform, the redirect manager is the most important of these. Map every old URL to its new equivalent before launch, or you’ll lose the rankings the old pages had built.

Keep Wix sites fast

Speed is where Wix sites most often struggle, and it’s usually down to design choices rather than the platform. Large background videos, animations, many fonts and uncompressed images all add weight.

Check your pages in PageSpeed Insights and look at the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console. The biggest wins are usually compressing images, removing unused apps and widgets, and cutting heavy effects above the fold. Our guide to Core Web Vitals explains which metrics Google uses, including INP, which replaced FID in March 2024.

Once the foundations are in place, rankings come from the same things they do on any site: useful content that matches what people search for, and links from other relevant websites.

Use the Wix blog to answer the questions your customers ask before they buy. Link new posts to your service pages, and link related posts to each other. Then work on earning mentions and links from local press, industry sites, suppliers and partners.

If your Wix site isn’t ranking and you’re not sure whether the problem is the platform or the setup, an SEO audit will tell you. Book a free strategy session and we’ll look at it with you.

Common questions

Can a Wix website rank on the first page of Google?

Yes. Google doesn’t penalise sites for being built on Wix. A Wix site with strong content, good internal linking and relevant backlinks can rank on the first page for competitive terms.

Is WordPress better than Wix for SEO?

WordPress gives more control over code, hosting and plugins, which helps large or complex sites. For most small business sites, the difference in rankings comes from content and links, not the platform.

Does Wix create a sitemap automatically?

Yes. Wix generates and updates an XML sitemap for you. You’ll find it at your domain followed by /sitemap.xml, and you should submit it in Google Search Console.

Do I need apps to do SEO on Wix?

No. Wix’s built-in SEO settings cover titles, descriptions, URLs, redirects, robots.txt and structured data. Extra apps are rarely needed and can slow the site down.
