ChatGPT ads sit below the answer and, OpenAI says, don't influence it. Here is why earning a place in the answer matters more than ever.

ChatGPT ads won’t buy anyone a place inside the answer, so the most valuable spot in ChatGPT is still free. OpenAI says ads sit below the answer, are clearly labelled and don’t influence what ChatGPT recommends. That makes earning your way into the answer more important now, not less.

Ads have been live in the UK since June 2026, the first European market after the US and a handful of others. Five months in, plenty of business owners are asking the same thing: if competitors can pay to appear in ChatGPT, does the work we’ve done to get recommended still count?

It does. Here’s why, what’s genuinely changed, and what we’d do about it.

What ChatGPT ads actually are

OpenAI’s own description of its approach to advertising sets out the rules. Ads appear at the bottom of answers, separated from the answer and clearly labelled. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, which are based on what’s most helpful to the person asking.

A few other details matter:

  • Not everyone sees them. Ads show on the free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users don’t see ads at all.
  • Some topics are off limits. OpenAI says ads aren’t eligible near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health and politics, and aren’t shown to users it knows or predicts are under 18.
  • They’re mostly contextual. Digiday’s report on the UK launch describes ads being matched to the context of the conversation rather than to a detailed profile of the person.

The answer is still the prize

Think about how people use ChatGPT to find a supplier. They ask “who are the best accountants in Leeds for a small business” or “which CRM should a 20-person sales team use”, and they read the answer. The brands named in that answer get the trust. The ad underneath is a footnote, and a clearly labelled one.

That’s very different from Google, where several ads can fill the screen before the first organic result. In ChatGPT, the organic answer comes first and the paid slot comes after it. So the businesses that get named, compared and recommended inside the answer still win the attention, and they don’t pay per click for it.

If anything, ads make the gap clearer. A rival who can’t earn a mention can now buy a spot beneath yours. A rival who is mentioned and advertises gets both. The one place you can’t afford to be missing is the answer itself.

What’s hype and what isn’t

Hype: “Organic AI visibility is dead because brands can pay their way in.” On OpenAI’s stated rules, they can’t pay their way into the answer, only beneath it.

Hype: “You need to start advertising in ChatGPT to stay visible.” For most businesses, the bigger and cheaper opportunity is still being the brand ChatGPT recommends. Ads are a separate decision.

Real: ChatGPT is becoming a commercial search channel. When a platform starts selling ads, it’s because people are using it to make buying decisions. That’s the strongest signal yet that your share of AI answers is worth tracking like rankings.

Real: Expectations will rise. Once people see brands advertising in ChatGPT, they’ll notice which brands are recommended without paying. Being in the answer becomes a quiet signal of credibility.

Three things worth doing now

  1. Ask ChatGPT about your market. Run the five questions your buyers would ask before contacting you, on a free account and a paid one. Note who’s named, how you’re described, and which sources it leans on.
  2. Fix what it gets wrong. AI tools build their picture of you from your website and from what others say about you: directories, reviews, press and comparison articles. Out-of-date or inconsistent information there shows up in the answer. Our guide to what AI SEO is covers how that works.
  3. Earn the mentions that get you cited. Clear service pages, answers to buyers’ real questions and coverage on sites AI tools trust are what move you into the answer. That’s the core of our AI SEO agency work.
