Netflix has confirmed a new Stranger Things series for 2028, and UK searches are climbing again. Here's what fans asked Google.

Netflix has confirmed a new live-action Stranger Things series for 2028, and UK search volume for the show is already climbing again. Ahrefs estimates around 177,000 UK searches for “stranger things” this month, up from 130,000 in October, and there isn’t even a trailer yet.

We’ll admit some bias here. Our founder, Danny Daley, is a massive Stranger Things fan, and his favourite character is Murray Bauman, so Friday’s news was never going to pass quietly at Circulate. In true Murray style, we went digging for the truth: when searches started climbing again, we looked at the data to see what people were actually asking.

If you run a business, that rebound matters. The finale left millions of people with questions, and they took them straight to Google. How fast search volume rose and fell, what people asked, and where the answers came from shows how search works now: one big moment can multiply searches overnight, and Google answers more and more of those questions on the results page before anyone clicks.

What Netflix announced on Stranger Things Day

Netflix announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure on Friday 6 November 2026, Stranger Things Day, alongside a short teaser. It’s a live-action prequel set in the 1950s, due on Netflix in 2028 (Collider).

  • The Duffer Brothers co-created it with Kate Trefry, who is the writer and showrunner.
  • Joe Wright is directing and Shawn Levy is an executive producer.
  • No cast has been named. Casting is ongoing and production is in New Mexico (Scripps News).

Still unknown: the cast, the exact release date and even the setting, as early reports disagree on which state its town of Marion sits in. The original series ended on New Year’s Eve 2025, which was 1am on New Year’s Day in the UK.

How UK search volume moved after the final episode

UK searches for “stranger things” peaked at about 3.1 million in December 2025, the month of the finale. By October 2026 they had fallen 96%, to around 130,000. Then Netflix’s announcement pushed them back up by about a third.

Month UK searches for “stranger things”
June 2025 269,000
October 2025 537,000
November 2025 2,151,000
December 2025 (finale) 3,082,000
January 2026 2,401,000
February 2026 487,000
June 2026 169,000
October 2026 130,000
November 2026 (announcement, estimate) 177,000

The finale didn’t end the searching. A week later, a fan theory called Conformity Gate claimed the ending was an illusion and a secret ninth episode would drop on 7 January 2026. It didn’t exist, but enough people went looking that Netflix briefly struggled (Techdirt). “Conformity gate” still gets around 10,000 UK searches a month, while the literal search “stranger things episode 9” gets almost none. People searched for the name of the theory they’d heard about, not the episode.

The questions people asked Google most

Most of that search volume came as questions. Seven of the ten biggest UK questions are about whether a favourite character survives. Across ten “does X die” and “who dies” questions, that comes to more than 53,000 UK searches a month.

The second pattern matters more for business owners. Google shows an AI Overview for 25 of the 30 most-searched Stranger Things questions. The few without one are about release times and where to watch, where Google shows its own panels instead. So most fans got their answer without visiting a single website, which is zero-click search at full scale.

What fan searches tell you about your own customers

Search volume in your industry rises the same way. A news story, a deadline or a launch sends it up, and most of the new searches are questions rather than your service name. A fan asks “does Max die”. A business owner asks “how long does SEO take” or “why has my traffic dropped”.

And like the fans, more of them now get an answer from an AI Overview or ChatGPT before they click anything. That changes the job. Ranking tenth for a question does very little. Being the source the AI answer quotes is what gets your name in front of the buyer, and our guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews covers how.

Here’s what’s hype and what isn’t. Writing a Stranger Things post won’t bring you buyers, and chasing pop culture traffic you can’t use is a waste of a content budget. The useful lesson is the pattern: big moments send search volume up in predictable waves of questions, and whoever answers them clearly gets seen.

Three things to do this month

  1. List the questions your buyers ask before they call you. Pull them from sales calls, your inbox and the “People also ask” box for your main services.
  2. Answer each one in the first sentence of a page. AI Overviews and ChatGPT lift short, direct answers. Our AI SEO work starts here, and for B2B companies it’s often the quickest win.
  3. Publish before your next spike, not during it. Your industry has its own announcement days: a regulation deadline, a product launch, a busy season. Get the answers live a few weeks ahead so Google has already crawled them.
